In October of 1990, the state record for a brown trout was caught in Tribal waters. It weighed 15 pounds, 2 ounces. Those days will soon be returning as a revitalization of this favorite sport is in progress here in Cherokee. New hatcheries, new management and new policies have been implemented and approximately 1.7 million eggs will be hatched this year into Tribal waters. A new "catch & release" program will be introduced later this year and will attract "trophy" fishermen from around the world.

Some people prefer our trout streams, while others enjoy the tranquility of the Tribal trout ponds located on Big Cove Road. No state license (NC or other states) is required for North Carolina Trout fishing. All you need is a Tribal Fishing Permit, available at most Reservation businesses. The Tribal permit sells for $10 for 1 day and $17 for a 2 day permit. The permit has a creel limit of 10 fish. Permits for longer periods are available.

Children under 12 are not required to have a Tribal fishing permit as long as they are accompanied by someone with the proper permit.

All rivers and ponds are open every day from the last Saturday in March through the end of the following February. Cherokee's fishing program is managed by the Cherokee Fish and Game Management, a program of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
